Streamdown

Streamdown is a React component library that renders streaming Markdown content in real time for AI-powered applications. It handles challenges that arise when Markdown is tokenized and streamed, such as incomplete syntax and progressive rendering, to keep the user experience smooth and coherent.

It integrates with a streaming workflow to parse and format content as it arrives from AI models, applying styles and transitions that adapt to the streaming state. The library is designed to work out of the box with sensible defaults and can be extended with plugins to tailor the rendering pipeline.

Streamdown provides typography, GFM features, and built-in animations, while offering per-word and per-token streaming visuals. It includes tooling for code blocks, math, diagrams, and support for ideographic punctuation, with safety measures for links and images during streaming.

The project supports various modes of use, from simple markdown rendering to a customizable setup via plugins and components. It emphasizes a zero-configuration start and allows developers to opt into additional features as needed.
