About OpenScreen

OpenScreen is a free, open-source screen recorder and video editor for Windows, macOS and Linux. It captures a window or a full display and turns the recording into a demo video with automatic zooms, a styled background frame and an editable cursor. It is built for anyone making product demos or tutorials, including developers who want an AI coding agent to generate a video automatically.

OpenScreen records through each platform's native capture API — ScreenCaptureKit on macOS, Windows Graphics Capture on Windows, and PipeWire through the ScreenCast portal on Linux — and composites the preview and the final export on the GPU with a native Rust renderer. The pointer is recorded separately from the pixels, so its size and style can be changed later, and clicks drive the automatic zoom placement.

Its automatic zoom reads recorded clicks with no AI model or network call, while separate AI-backed features run through Whisper for on-device transcription and burned-in captions, an optional chat-based editing agent, and caption translation into 15 languages, each gated behind a user-supplied provider key. It can blur or replace a webcam background without a green screen, add 3D camera moves, and export to multiple aspect ratios.

OpenScreen runs on Windows 10 (1903+), macOS 13+ and Linux, distributed as a Microsoft Store package, a .dmg, an .exe, a .deb, a .rpm, a .pacman, an AppImage and a Nix flake, and it is MIT licensed with no account, watermark or paid tier. It has no hosted sharing or live streaming, no mobile app, and captions are burned into the video rather than exported as separate SRT or VTT files.
