Art Review Generator

Generate and analyze language used to describe art and culture

About Art Review Generator

Art Review Generator is a natural language processing tool and text generator that creates a medium length set of sentences from a prompt. It aims to generate language that approximates the training data and is used to describe art and culture. The tool takes a set of words as input and produces text that mirrors typical sentence structure and vocabulary found in reviews.

The system runs on a dataset drawn from long-running art reviews and produces outputs that reflect the patterns in that material. It does not claim true understanding of prompts or training data, but instead produces plausible results based on the likelihood of word sequences. The interpreter lacks understanding of the meaning of prompts or the training data, and the user can observe how the model handles various word combinations.

The generator can reveal both the potential and limits of procedural language models. It produces language that includes intent, emotion, technique, and impact when describing art, and may also introduce academic jargon. The results can vary and reveal how training data shapes language used in reviews, including biases and changing language across decades.

The tool is a demonstrator of language generation for art criticism and related cultural expression. It is built to generate text and to offer analysis of the generated language, with a focus on how style and vocabulary emerge from training data. The site provides information on the tool and its background, including training details and the creator's perspective.

Frequently asked questions

What is this?
This is a tool to generate and analyze language used to describe fine art and other cultural expression. It takes a set of words as a prompt and then generates a medium length set of sentences that approximate the training data, which is 57 years of actual art reviews from Artforum magazine.
How did you make it?
A full-length technical writeup can be found on my blog. Essentially, I took an existing language model (GPT-2) and trained it with 57 years of art reviews from ArtForum Magazine, over 21,000 reviews.
Where did the idea come from?
I published a small book of procedurally generated photographs and it seemed appropriate to also use a computer generated introduction. I tried a variety of online tools, but most were too limited or generic for what I wanted.
Doesn't it just copy the reviews you trained it with, just kind of randomly?
No, there is no duplication. All the text is generated word by word. It may seem copied because the results are so plausible, but they are novel statements.
Why do I have to give my email and wait for results?
Because I'm cheap! This sort of thing is processing intensive and delivering realtime results would have required buying hosting and compute time that are very expensive.
