About Amical

Amical is an open-source dictation app that turns speech into formatted text in whatever application has focus, such as an editor, a chat window or an email draft. The user holds a key or clicks a floating widget, talks, and the words land in the app. Transcription runs locally with Whisper or in the cloud after signing in. It is released under the MIT licence and works offline once a local model is set up.

Amical reads the context of the active application and formats the dictation to suit it, so an email in Gmail comes out in a professional register while a post on Instagram stays casual. Headings spoken in Notion become heading blocks and lists become bullet blocks; in Jira, spoken sections become structured tickets with repro steps, expected versus actual and acceptance criteria. Saying "five hundred error" produces 500 error and "user dot id" produces user.id.

Amical offers push-to-talk and hands-free dictation, automatic language detection and transcription in 100+ languages, including mixed-language dictation. Custom vocabulary teaches it project codenames, teammate names and internal acronyms, and custom shortcuts rebind push-to-talk, the hands-free toggle, paste-last-transcript and new note. It auto-corrects grammar, fixes pronouns and adds contextual emojis. Local models use Whisper for speech and Ollama for language; cloud models are available as well, along with MCP integrations, custom prompts, snippets and notes.

Amical runs on Mac, Windows, iPhone and Android. The Free plan includes unlimited local dictation and 2,000 words per week of cloud dictation. Premium adds unlimited cloud dictation, shared vocabulary, team management and priority access to new features at $7 per month billed yearly ($84/year) or $10 per month. An Enterprise plan with private model hosting, custom models, SSO/SAML and seat-based licences is priced on request. No data is retained or used for model training.
