Cline serves as an autonomous coding agent that can be integrated into multiple development environments. It reads your project structure, understands file relationships, and makes coordinated code changes across a codebase. It monitors linter and compiler errors as it operates, fixing issues like missing imports, type mismatches, and syntax errors before they appear to the user. In editors like VS Code and JetBrains, edits appear as diffs for review, modification, or reversion, and changes are tracked with checkpoints to allow undoing the agent’s work.
Cline executes commands directly in the terminal and watches output in real time. It can install packages, run build scripts, execute tests, deploy applications, and manage databases. For long-running processes, it continues in the background, reacting to new output and catching compile errors, test failures, and server crashes as they occur.
Cline supports two modes: Plan mode for exploring the codebase and outlining a strategy, and Act mode for executing the plan. Each file edit or terminal command requires user approval, though auto-approve can be enabled for autonomous operation. This keeps users in control of what actually changes, even when automation is active.
Rules and skills allow customization per project via .clinerules files, guiding coding standards, architecture conventions, deployment procedures, and testing requirements. Skills can load model-specific rules when needed, and the CLI, VS Code extension, and JetBrains plugin pick up these configurations automatically.
Cline is designed to work with multiple AI models and providers. The SDK enables building tools, multi-agent teams, connectors, and scheduled automations, while MCPs connect to databases, query APIs, and manage cloud infrastructure. It supports plugins, MCP servers, and custom tools through its plugin system.
